Saturday 16th June saw 56 members and guests of the C.A.S.A. Social Club gather on the terrace of The Holiday Inn for the annual club BBQ.  This event tends to be one of the highlights of the C.A.S.A. season and this year was again a great success.  Due to the rather strange recent weather the heat in the early evening was less intense than it has been in previous years and this proved to be a boon.  A very good singer located just inside the restaurant door kept us entertained and the superb attentive service from the staff ensured an excellent evening. On the food side several members commented on the wonderful Samosas and Onion Bhajis - which vanished as fast as the kitchen could make them!  Our thanks to The Holiday Inn staff for their support, and also to our own members who kindly donated over 200 Euro towards the A.C.C.A. charities 2018  'Back to school project'.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Friday 18th May

 

Magical Mystery Motor Meander

followed by lunch.

We have 8 cars for the meander and

38 people booked for lunch.

 

Approx 40 km country drive from a location near the coast (starting at a cafe/coffee shop for refreshments) to a traditional Portuguese restaurant just north of Rasmalho on the EN266 Monchique road.  Detailed joining instructions provided after booking.

Minimum 2 and maximum 5 people per car, at least one person must be a CASA member.

 

The Treasure Hunt / Motor Meander will start around 10:30 and should take about 1 ½ hours. There will be a prize for the most clues correctly solved en-route, please note it this not a race.

The prize plus a trophy to be held for one year will be presented during lunch.

 

There is ample outside patio seating at the O' Caçador Restaurant and the bar will be open, any pre-lunch refreshments are not included in the lunch price so should be paid for when ordering.

If joining for lunch only without taking part in the treasure hunt please arrive no later than 12:45.

 

The lunch will be served at 13:00 sharp and the menu consists of:

 

Special Couvert on the table:

   Normal bread, butter, pate, olives plus additional Portuguese cheese and ham.

 

Main Course, choice of:

  Mixed grill (pork ribs & slices, pork sausage & chicken pieces)

  1/2 chicken - available with or without piri-piri

  Wild Boar Stew (a house speciality)

  Fish (probably Dourado) done in the oven

  Lamb done in the oven

 

Sharing platters of Salads and Potatoes will be served.

 

Sweet

Mixed shared platters of small portions of assorted house sweets and fruits will be served so everyone can sample as wanted.

Price - INCLUSIVE of the Magical Mystery Motor Meander AND Lunch as above is 18 Euro (non-members 20 Euro).

On Friday May 18th the  'Magical Mystery Motor Meander' started with a free coffee at the coffee shop at Apolonia in Lagoa and was followed by lunch at the  O' Caçador  restaurant near Rasmalho. A slow drive of some 40Km checking out some very strange clues (including a long abandoned JetSki - picture below) made for great fun. We were pleased to have 8 cars take part and 38 attended the prize-giving and lunch. The CASA committee wish to extend their thanks to David (on loan from the Classic Car Club) and Helena for the vast amount of work they put into planning the whole entertaining Treasure Hunt for us. Thanks also to the enthusiastic participants and we congratulate those in the three cars who solved the most clues and so get to display our special trophies on their respective mantlepieces for the next year.

Although quite a few members were still away following Easter we managed a good showing and an excellent morning ensued.  A generous cold buffet combined with a similarly generous helping of Prosecco covered the physical requirements for a brunch while an excellent guitarist/singer quietly provided a background more artistic element while we all chatted away.  A most successful morning, for which we owe thanks to Anthony and all the other staff at The Wolf.

We ask that you arrive soon after 6 o'clock when we will start serving a Welcome Drink. If you arrive earlier (prior to 6) you may wait in the Naval Club bar/coffee shop where you may also purchase additional refreshments if you wish.

The  AGM  will start sharp at 6:30 and Dinner will be served after the meeting, probably about 7:15.


Starters : Seasonal Soup OR Salad


Mains: Lamb with mint sauce  OR

             with chips and rice.

Non-members are welcome to attend (€22) but may not take part in any voting which may be required during the AGM.

 

Following the enforced last-minute change of venue for the CASA 2018 A.G.M. we managed to hold a highly successful meeting and dinner at the Portimao Naval Club on Saturday 3rd March. The wind and rain may have prevented us enjoying the usual river view from the outside terrace but had no further impact on the evening.  The Naval Club's meeting room was perfect for our 48 members to partake in the short meeting following a welcoming glass of Prosecco to drive out the negative effects of the current weather.   The usual formal proceedings, including the re-election of the committee and presentation of the auditors report were dispatched without delay and we all then adjourned upstairs to the main restaurant for an excellent three-course dinner served by the friendly and attentive staff.

Fifty CASA members and guests met in Alvor for lunch at the Por do Sol restaurant on Saturday 10th February. We have used this lovely restaurant a number of times over the years as we know it to provide consistently good food and we were not disappointed. Snr. Candido and his staff were amazingly attentive and in particular they took great care with special service for our youngest attendee of just 6 years old (having her along reduced the average age considerably!).  We had several new members attending this lunch so were very pleased that everything worked well for them; in fact one of our newer members won the free raffle. The staff also displayed a great sense of humour and therefore a good time was had by all.

Fifty members and guests met at Brasserie Rosal just outside Carvoeiro for the CASA annual 'After Hangover Dinner'. This event, the first every year for many years now, celebrates the survival of the rigors of the combined Christmas and New Year festivities; it is always highly popular with our members.  The evening went with a swing;  Andi (our host) had the place nice and warm with a blazing log fire in the main restaurant and had the forethought to have additional heaters where seating was away from the main fire.  Good food, a comfortable ambience and the opportunity to meet friends and swap details of our Christmases; difficult to beat!
We were also pleased to welcome four new members to the club at the dinner.

Our Christmas dinner at O Barradas on Saturday, 2nd December 2017 was much enjoyed by all 42 members attending.   We strolled through the sparkling everglade of the outside restaurant, into the cosiness of the conservatory, where the chefs in the kitchen were busy emanating delicious smells with the promise of delicious fusions to come. After our welcome drink of the superb house rosé and tasty homemade pate canapés, we were welcomed into the restaurant, log fire blazing in the hearth and clementines decorating the beautifully festive tables.  The courses were imaginative, filled with Christmas cheer and mouthwatering flavours.

Luis and Andrea have had (not surprisingly), another amazing year of great success and we were so fortunate that they ended there season with such an amazing dinner for us. The staff were all very professional, friendly and enthusiastic, serving us with speed – nothing was too much trouble.

Father Christmas made his gift bearing visit and Christmas carols were to be heard, Christmas crackers, jokes and happy sounds abounding throughout the evening.

There was indeed a prize for the best dressed woman (chosen by our host Luis) and this went to Jenny.

On Sunday 19th November 41 members headed out west for lunch at Restaurant O' Caseiro. All enjoyed the meal, the starters in particular were lovely. The wine flowed and overall it was a lovely lunch served by a very attentive staff, so we offer a big vote of thanks to Lionel for a superb lunch.

Forty-one travelled on Monday 6th November by coach to Granada where we were dropped right outside the Hotel Carmen for our two night visit. Tuesday morning we had free to wander around town, many taking the chance to shop of course, then we met back at the hotel for the short ride up the hill to the Alhambra. Two guides met us there and we set off for our 2 1/2 hour guided tour which was fascinating. Wednesday saw us free for part of the day, then taking the coach on to Cordoba. On the way we had a short stop at an old Spanish railway station - out of service for some 35 years but now a thriving restaurant and local shop. Thursday our guide took us around the old 'Jewish quarter' then into the Mesquita, truly a wonder of the world. About half of our group had not been before and were spellbound, thanks to our entertaining and very knowlegable guide. On Friday, with some reluctance, we re-boarded our coach and returned without incident to our homes in the Algarve. A superb week which seems to have been much enjoyed by all.

Our lunch service started at 1:30 to allow members to travel to Faro by the train from Lagos arriving Faro at 12:54. A a pre-lunch welcome drink  gave the fifty of us a brief chance to greet our friends then a three course lunch was served to us by the students. Most attendees left in time to catch the 16:19 train home, a few stalwarts remained over a more leisurely coffee and to wander through the fair outside before catching the 17:15 train.  A very enjoyable day out.

The 24 attendees first sat outside on the patio with their welcome drink and once they were ready set off in groups of six for thier round. The course was reasonably easy to start with but got a little harder as play progressed. A great deal of entertainment was had as members negotiated dinosaurs and similar obstructions (photo's below). The weather was gorgeous and after playing everyone sat down to an 'English' tea of various filled sandwiches, scones with jam and clotted cream, plus cake followed by tea/coffee. The staff, Tanya & João, made us feel very welcome, so a very big thanks to them. We then presented a winners cup to David Harris for the most enthusiastic, though not necessarily highest scoring, round. The general feeling was that all enjoyed the event so much they would like to do this again next year - or sooner!

We had 29 attendees at Salgadosmar when members met up after CASA’s summer break and apart from enjoying the delicious food the conversation was in full flow with members exchanging details of their travels during the break, so much so that it was difficult to get a little quiet to be able to bid welcome to all at the lunch! A lovely start to our busy autumn schedule.

We had 31 attendees (members & guests), the food was delicious as always at the Do Cais restaurant, the menu started with the covert of olives, carrots, tuna pâté and bread, followed by mixed salad or soup, the chef Inácio then presented us with delicious roast lamb or fish freshly caught locally that day, finishing with pudim flan or fruit salad; there was plenty of wine with the bottles on the table and as much as was asked for, also for those who preferred soft drinks and beer were available, we then finished up with coffee. The waiters João & Joel were very attentive throughout the evening and nothing was too much trouble for them, so the evening went swimmingly.

Fifty-three members and guests braved the current Algarve heatwave to partake of our annual BBQ at The Holiday Inn on Saturday 17th June. When we gathered on the terrace the beach below us was packed with holiday makers making the most of the sunshine in an effort to get cooked to the same level of perfection as our spare ribs and chicken thighs. We enjoyed not only the BBQ food but also a superb lamb curry & excellent samosas. The great food combined well with the attentive service provided by a fleet of Holiday Inn waiters who kept our tables clear of dirty dishes and our glasses filled with our chosen beverages non-stop for three hours. By the end of he evening the tourists had all retreated to tend their sunburn leaving us a picturesque and deserted beach to look at.  A perfect setting for the end of a near perfect evening.  Our thanks to the dedicated staff of the Holiday Inn.

 

23rd and 30th  April

Sunday Roast Lunch

The Village Inn  near Ferragudo.

The restaurant has a seating limit of 30 people,

hence the two lunches over two Sundays.

 

Menu:

STARTERS: Carrot soup with a hint of orange & ginger or
Mixed salad.
MAINS: Roast Pork or Steak & Kidney Pie

or  Chicken & Mushroom pie or
Grilled Salmon with butter & a little dill.
Roast potatoes and vegetables will be served with all the above;
there is a choice of rice instead of the potatoes with
the salmon if preferred.
SWEET:  Apple Crumble or Ice Cream.


Half a bottle of wine per person, or soft drink or a beer,

water & coffee.


The cost was €18 to members and €20 to guests.

 

Both 'editions' of our Sunday Lunch at The Village Inn proved very popular. Splitting the event over two Sundays was actually advantageous as members with other commitments were able to choose the one which best suited them, a couple of members even attended both! An excellent meal beautifully served made for a very enjoyable Sunday in this delightful restaurant which has a personal feel, almost like being at home, even to all the books. Our thanks to Kathy for all the hard work which she and her staff put into our lunches to make them such a success.
